ABC's owned-and-operated television stations are in markets as large as the San Francisco Bay Area and as small as Beaumont, Texas.

History

ABC Network

Capital Cities/ABC

The newly merged company, Capital Cities/ABC Inc., was forced to sell off some stations due to FCC ownership rules. Between them, ABC and Capital Cities owned more television stations than FCC rules allowed at the time. Of the former Capital Cities television stations, the merged company opted to keep KTRK-TV in Houston, KAKE in Wichita, KTUL in Tulsa, KTVX in Salt Lake City, WFTV in Orlando, WTEN-TV in Albany, WTVD-TV in Durham, and KFSN-TV in Fresno. FCC rules could have also forced a sale of Capital Cities' WPVI-TV in Philadelphia and WTNH-TV in New Haven as well due to a large signal overlap with WABC-TV, but the merged company successfully received two permanent waivers from the FCC - one for WPVI after citing CBS' ownership of television stations in New York City (WCBS-TV) and Philadelphia (at the time WCAU-TV) under grandfathered status and one for WTNH after citing the RKO Network's ownership of stations in New York City (WRKO-TV), Philadelphia (WRPH-TV) and New Haven (at the time WQUE-TV) under grandfathered status. The FCC rules also could have forced a sale of KBMT in Beaumont, Texas due to signal overlap with KTRK, but a waiver to keep the station was also secured after Capital Cities/ABC cited that KBMT was more close to the Lake Charles, Louisiana market than the Houston market.

Disney/ABC division

In 1998, ABC purchased WPDE-TV Florence-Myrtle Beach from Diversified Communications.

In 2004, ABC traded WICS in Springfield, Illinois to the Sinclair Broadcast Group in exchange for their Dayton, Ohio NBC affiliate WKEF. As part of the sale, WKEF swapped affiliations with then-ABC affiliate WDTN, returning ABC to WKEF as a ABC O&O.

In 2011, ABC traded WJRT-TV of Flint, Michigan and WTVG of Toledo, Ohio to Gray Television in exchange for ABC's St. Louis affiliate KDNL-TV and former Tulsa O&O KTUL. KDNL became an ABC O&O, while KTUL returned to being an ABC O&O.
