On September 30, 2004, Air El Kadsre Flight 96, a Airbus A340, flying from El Kadsre City International Airport in El Kadsre City to Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport in Quebec City with a stopover in Newark, New Jersey at Newark Liberty International Airport, was hijacked by 6 members of Shobatsu-shi Ichizoku and purposely crashed into the parking lot of the Michael Vlokozu Stadium in Seahaus. All but one of the 92 passengers on board were killed while 3 on the ground were killed. The accident raised airport security in the country.

Aircraft and crew

The aircraft was a Airbus A340 registered as EK9277, which had been delivered to Air El Kadsre in 1995. The aircraft was powered by four CFM International CFM56 engines.

The captain was 62-year old Vukmir Kovalenko, a Ukrainian national who had joined Air El Kadsre in 1998, and had previously flown for Aeroflot and UIA. He had 20,032 flight hours, including 2,260 hours on the A340. The first officer was 28-year old Stephen Yount of Capulco, who had been with the airline since 2000 and had logged 5,236 flight hours, with 1,021 of them on the A340. The flight attendants consisted of Natalie McNamara, Eve Basilan, Stella Ulf, Anna-Lena Olsson, Peng Shui, and Louise Peeters.

Summary

The team of hijackers was led by 34-year-old Hideo Takashi from Osaka. He came to El Kadsre in 1991 to obtain a pilot's license. Sources said he sat in economy class alongside fellow hijackers 26-year-old Miyako Kobashi and 21-year-old Chizuo Shima. The other 3 hijackers sat in first class, which included 20-year-old Takashi Haruki and his brother 27-year-old Akira, as well as 28-year-old Wasato Ito.

Passengers

One of the passengers on Flight 96 was Canadian actor Jace Palladino, who was primarily a voice actor with Nelvana. A groundskeeper for the Michael Vlokozu Stadium and 2 others on the ground also died.

The sole survivor of the crash was a 50-year old Brooklyn native named Rossella Orecchia. Seahaus Fire and Rescue Dept. 2 firefighters found her lying on the ground with serious injuries amongst the wreckage, still strapped in her seat. After the crash, she was airlifted to Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts where she was treated. She currently lives in West Orange, New Jersey and has occasionally granted interviews about her experience.
