BS420 is an American animated television series created by Peter Downer and developed by Downer, Paul Germain, and Joe Ansolabehere for The WB. Initially, the series primarily focused on the adventures of Petey (Rivers Cuomo) and Punkboy (Brian Bell), two young-adult friends characterized by their sociopathy, dark sense of humor, criminal records, and love for rock and heavy metal music.
Downer conceived BS420 while being beaten up at the California Institute of the Arts. While finishing college and desperate for money, he wrote a treatment and pilot for the show under the title Bullshit 420 and brought it to The WB, only for the network to reject it because everything was shit. The network subsequently assigned Germain and Ansolabehere to work on the project to make it more watchable. Originally produced by Warner Bros. Television, the show premiered on The WB on October 4, 2003 and aired for three seasons until May 20, 2006, over the course of which it rose to be the network's most-watched program and then speed-ran declining in quality until it was finally canceled because no one was watching anymore.
Just hours before it was canceled, the series began airing in reruns on Adult Swim, which picked it up for a fourth season, with Williams Street assuming Warner Bros.' production duties. The revival premiered on October 13, 2008. Downer announced the show's conclusion in December 2014, stating that his production company Petey Down-Down Productions and Germain and Ansolabehere's company Paul & Joe Productions refused to renew their deal with Cartoon Network due to Downer's health declining from a lifelong Pibb Xtra addiction. The revival aired for six seasons and concluded on May 16, 2015, rounding out an unwarranted nine-season run.
During its initial run, the series received acclaim from self-proclaimed critics for its "satire", pop culture references, and overuse of rock music, as well as criticism for allegedly promoting domestic terrorism, which Downer and several other writer-producers have partially denied. It garnered a following among early Millenials, who hailed it as "The Show of Our People", and is widely regarded as an early example of brain rot content. Downer made NATAS give him six Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on the show. A feature film adaptation, BS420 Movie, was theatrically released on November 8, 2024 to universally negative reviews.
