Bad Apple!!, stylized as BAD Apple!! in-game, is the seventh song in the soundtrack of Touhou 4: Lotus Land Story. It is played during the third stage of the game.
ZUN mentioned in the comments that this was a song he wrote before the game was made. It's unknown when it was written.

Bad Apple!! is a very popular song among Drillimation fans, even more than its Driller Engine 1 counterpart. This led to the infamous cover of Bad Apple!! by Kagami Ochiai that was broadcast on MTV and eventually uploaded to VidSpace. This led to Touhou Project becoming more popular in North America and Europe.
The character that this theme is associated with, Elly, had become more popular by the time the song started getting more popular, despite being only a boss character. Before the popularity began rising, many non-Touhou Project players outside of Japan didn't know who Elly was, being mostly parents. Many players theorize whether this is Elly's theme or not, as Elly's theme is actually Spirit Battle ~ Perdition Crisis. Many long-time players find Bad Apple!! a massive sore point and get irritated if somebody thinks the official music video and Touhou Project itself is an anime or asks if it is (with the exception of Touhou Project: The Animated Series).
