The 'PC-9800 Series' (Japanese: ＰＣ－９８００シリーズ, Hepburn: 'Pī Shī Kyūsen Happyaku Sirīzu'), often called the PC-98, is a series of Japanese 16-bit and 32-bit computers that were manufactured by NEC from 1982 until 2003. This led to NEC's dominance in the computer industry, and more than 18 million machines have been sold as of 1999.
The PC-98 was prolific with its huge library of games, with it attracting notable developers such as Compile and Drillimation (and its parent company Namco). Many ports of popular Drillimation arcade and console games saw PC-98 releases, alongside their IBM PC/AT counterparts in Japan and North America. While these machines were successful in Japan, they were not successful in North America, as only one machine was released there: the APC III.
Fun Fact: Almost any Drillimation game released from 1986 to 2009 can run on a PC-98, as long as the appropriate hardware and DirectX versions are installed.
