EuroMedia is a Euro Republican based mass media holding conglomerate owned by TVVC and Bertelsmann.

History

In 1987, EuroMedia was founded to be the parent company of a new third channel which eventually launched as TV3. It’s shareholders were originally Modern Times Group (who were founded a few months prior), Teleclub & the American News Corporation. The involvement of the latter gave them the entirety of the 20th Century Fox film & TV library to air on their channels. The latter divested themselves to just 10% in 1997 and left completely in 2000, but continued to work closely with EuroMedia.

In 1988, they acquired 33.9% of Thames Television, and fully acquired them following their move to an independent production company. In the same year, they produced their first film, Marriage, under the newly found Picturebox Films subsidiary. It made more films as time went on and soon became the largest non-American film company.

In 1989, EuroMedia acquired Australian based independent producer Grundy Television.

In 1990, Teleclub's share of EuroMedia was sold to Kuboia-based TVVC.

EuroMedia bought Granada Television in 1991.

In 1993, EuroMedia acquired a controlling stake in British Satellite Broadcasting, slowly buying into it, becoming it’s full owner in December 1994.

In 1993, EuroMedia added Canal+ to it’s portfolio, and the following year, acquired Carlton and Central Independent Television. Carlton would be immediately renamed Capital. It would merge with United News & Media in 1999, and sold the Carlton/UNM assets (except for HTV & Meridian) to Capital Radio in 1999.

In 1995, they bought Australia's Ten Network for €2m.

In 1995, it sold 60% of Granada Television (which by now also included LWT) to DMGT.

Also in 1996, it announced it and Nordic telecommunications company Telenor were to launch a pay TV provider called Canal Digital, launched in March 1997. It was to use the Marcopolo (renamed Thor) satellite EuroMedia had owned since it's acquisition of BSB, and had also housed ET1 Digital since it's inception.

On 6th July, 1997, they acquired Italian media company Mediaset for an estimated €23m.

This expanded in 1998 when they became a major shareholder in Ireland's TVThree.

In 1999, they formed Independent Media, a company to own ITV stations Channel Television, UTV, Meridian & Border Television. It re-merged with Capital Communications in 2007, by which time Independent Media also owned radio stations (bought from Wireless Group & Communicorp).

In 2000, EuroMedia bought 50% of RTL Group from Bertelsmann before merging the next year.

In 2003, they became the parent company of the newly formed ITV plc. The new company would be a part of RTL Group, as sister channels to Channel 5

Then in 2005, for 5 million euros, they bought the Australian Nine Network, and sold it in 2016, to Discovery Inc.

On 6th May, 2005, CLT-UFA announced it would acquire CTVglobemedia, expanding it's operations to Canada.

In November 2005, EuroMedia and Telefónica reached a deal to merge.

On 6th May 2006, EuroMedia announced it’s intention to buy the remaining 25% of BSB (It’s ownership was extended to 75% upon their acquisition of ITV plc).

On 26th July, 2010, EuroMedia announced it would add British newspaper The Independent (and it’s upcoming spinoff, The I) to it's portfolio.

In 2010, after an attempted buyout by BSkyB, EuroMedia bought Virgin Media Television, and was renamed Living TV Group in the process.

On 1st April, 2020, EuroMedia put in a bid to acquire New Zealand television network Three from MediaWorks New Zealand, but lost to Discovery Inc. It is now going to acquire rival channel Prime.

On November 30, 2020, EuroMedia announced it would buy Debenhams & Arcadia Group to save them from administration.

On 13th December, 2020, EuroMedia acquired the Swedish Telia Company, and now operated TV4, Kanal 5 & TV3, albeit in different parts of the company.

On 4th January, 2021, EuroMedia moved the SBS assets of it's company to ProSieben Sat.1 Media following EuroMedia's acquisition of Telia, and in turn TV4, although it sold Finnish MTV3 to Discovery Inc. stating that it was unneeded.
