Huang Rong (Chinese: 黃榮; pinyin: Huáng Róng; August 1, 1967 - disappeared July 11, 1993) was a Tsengian singer-songwriter and composer. He achieved popularity in the late 1980s with the hits "Farewell" (告別) and "Mortal Men" (凡人). Huang disappeared in the early morning hours of July 11, 1993, while driving home from the 8th Golden Tune Awards ceremony. His disappearance is one of the most famous in Tseng, along with Elena Chan and Yong Ming-chun.
Early life[]
Huang's real name is Huang Rong-lai. He was born on August 1, 1967, in Mashan Hospital in Lizhong, Meihua, Tseng. He was the middle child, with one older sister and one younger brother. All of the Huangs worked in the fishing industry, including Huang's parents, who owned a seafood restaurant.
Music career[]
Huang dropped out of high school in the 11th grade to focus on his music career after winning the now-famous Meihai Hotel singing competition just for fun. At age 19, he was signed to the Lizhong branch of Zenghe Records. His first album, Venetian Nights, sold 500,000 copies and earned Huang a Golden Tune Award for Best New Artist. The 5th song in the album "Farewell", has become a classic in Tseng. However, Huang's career came to a halt a few weeks after the release of Venetian Nights because Huang needed to serve in the Tseng Armed Forces (Huang served in the air force). In 1988, Huang finished his service and released his second album, Mortal Men.
Disappearance[]
After attending the 8th Golden Tune Awards on the night of July 10, 1993, Huang took some autographs and photos. At around 12:30am (00:30) on July 11, Huang took one last photo with John Chen. Then he got in his 1993 Jaguar XJ (XJ40). That was the last anyone saw of him, as he didn't arrive at his Huatan house.
