Johanne Edward Koivula (born December 1, 1961) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and composer who co-founded the San Diego-based dream pop group Savior in 1982, being the rhythm guitarist and co-vocalist of the group. Following their break-up in 1993, Koivula became involved with Mark Mothersbaugh and members of Devo in the music production company Mutato Muzika. Although Savior would later reform in the early 2000s, Jan continues with his television and film work.
Early years[]
Koivula was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota and moved to San Diego County, California with his parents at the age of 6.
Savior[]
Koivula attended San Diego High School in the late 1970s. There, he performed in school plays and was a bassist/occasional vocalist in the school's jazz ensemble. At San Diego High School, he met Scott Laidley (the brother of Lalalala lead singer/co-founder Gabe Laidley) and Jocelin Keijzer. When they graduated high school, the three formed Savior with guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Flowers.
