The '''21''' rating is treated as an emergency rating used in productions that rely heavily on very strong and excessive discrimination, sexual activity or other controversial matters. Media rated with this rating cannot be aired on television or in cinemas, can only be purchased at specialist shops and, as the name suggests, can only be purchased by those aged 21 and over.

Leisure Rating Association, often shortened to LRA, is the official motion picture rating system for Kuboia since 1988.

Current ratings

Name Guidelines
YC Short for suitable for Young Children, and given to works that are deemed particularly suitable for younger children, such as pre-school television programmes and most educational series. There should be nothing in a work rated YC that the LRA believes could likely upset young children.

The YC rating is only used for home media releases and television, and is not used for cinema releases.
K Short for suitable for Kids. Used for films and other media that should be suitable for all audiences. Works under this rating may contain infrequent and very mild language and violence; mild violence may be permitted if it is cartoonish and unrealistic, and mild drug references may be permitted if a related anti-drug message is used simultaneously.
9 Used for works that are suitable only for children aged nine or older. Works in this category can feature mild language, violence and sexual references.

In cinemas, this rating is replaced with the 9C (9 with Caution) rating, which allows children under nine years old to view the film, but advises parents to consider whether the content is suitable for children.
13 Used for works suitable for audiences aged thirteen and over. They may contain moderate violence, moderate language and limited uses of strong language, as well as nudity without graphic detail. Works classified with a 13 rating can only air on television between 9:00p.m. and 5:00a.m.
18 Used for works suitable for adults only. May contain strong language, violence and sexual references, as well as severe drug use. Works classified with an 18 rating are only allowed to air on television between 11:00p.m. and 5:00a.m.

In addition to the main ratings, the LRA also may use an E rating for works exempt from classification. It is typically used for educational films, documentaries and music-related films.

Discontinued ratings

  • A - children under 13 must be accompanied by somebody aged 16 or over to view. Discontinued in 1991 and split into the 9 and 13 ratings.
  • X - suitable only for audiences aged 18 and over. Discontinued in 1991 and replaced by the 18 rating.

Cinema idents

The Leisure Rating Association have their own special idents that play in the cinema to inform the audience about the content present in the film that is about to be watched. They are almost always the last clip to be shown before the film is screened. Generally speaking, each age rating has a special colour associated with it, which is reflected in the ident; green for K, magenta for 9C, yellow for 13 and red for 18.

The original idents were produced in traditional animation, and featured the age rating in the centre of the screen. The rating then moved to the left and a box appeared on the right to explain any content that was featured in the film that may upset children or cause offence. These were used for almost fourteen years before a new set made with CGI imagery were rolled out across cinemas on 1st April 2005. These idents were updated to feature the new LRA logo and rating designs on 1st September 2017.

Another new set of idents were launched on 2nd July 2021. Unlike other sets of idents, these gave each age rating its own feel and music to match its audience and rating colour. The K ident has a more childlike feel to it, whilst the 9C ident has a more fantasty-like feel, the 13 ident has an "epic" nature and the 18 ident involves suspense.

Content and comparisons to other systems

Every product rated by LRA has a description indicating what content that the product contains that might be unsuitable for certain audiences. For example, if the product features inappropriate language and presence of alcohol, it might feature a description that states it "Features strong language and mild alcohol references."

Compared to the BBFC in the United Kingdom and the MPAA in the United States, the LRA is generally more lenient towards mild levels of violence, profanity and non-sexual nudity appearing in works with a lower rating, but are more strict in regards to more severe cases of innapropiate content, with usually only a bit of strong violence, sexual references or language being enough for a work to be awarded an 18 rating.

Since the LRA ratings lack an "equivalent" to the BBFC and MPAA's 15 and R ratings, films released with those classifications in their respective countries usually receive an 18 rating by the LRA. The LRA has repeatedly rejected suggestions from the media to introduce a new rating to counter this, citing that the current system "has proven to work well".
