Mandrake Premiere is an American adult animated musical black comedy web series created by Lauren "Lauribang" Latelo and produced by Electro Wolf, her production company. The show is about a war between Heaven and Hell.

The series was announced on Twitter on March 6, 2018,[1] and its trailer was posted on YouTube on October 26, 2018.[2] The show's first episode was uploaded to YouTube on February 16, 2019.[3]

Synopsis

Mandrake Premiere centers on a young woman named Julia Mandrake who lives in Heaven, and it tells the story of the in-universe Dead War II, the second war between Heaven and Hell. During the war, Mandrake tries to run the her own theater, the Mandrake Premiere.

Main characters

  • Julia Mandrake (voiced by Lucy Michaels) – The main character. She runs the Mandrake Premiere, a theater in Heaven City. She is the son of King Adam IV and Queen Eve. She has a girlfriend named Jade who works at the theater.
  • Jade Cloud (voiced by Allison Brown) – Julia's girlfriend and a worker at the theater.
  • Roswell Newmex (voiced by Mark Kowalski) – A 21-year-old actor and the manager of the Premiere. He is the star of a hardcore pornographic web series called Not Pornographic, Just Very Sexually Explicit.
  • Crucifix (voiced by Scott Wade) – The writer of a newsmagazine titled Technically Inaccurate and various sex novels.

Recurring characters

  • King Adam IV (voiced by James Welsh) – Julia's father and the King of Heaven.
  • Queen Eve II (voiced by Elizabeth Thomas) – Julia's mother and the Queen of Heaven. She worked as an actress when she was alive, but she was diagnosed with cancer and died.
  • Dan Deadbeat (voiced by T.J. Fallish) – A demon and the President of Hell. His campaign slogan is "Make Hell Great Again". Before dying, his name was Dan Kirkbeat.
  • Kenny the Demon (voiced by Scott Shiwei Lee) – The Vice President of Hell. He died at age 29, making him the youngest politician in Hell.
  • Lucifer (voiced by Eric MacDonald) and Lilith S. Deadbeat – Dan Deadbeat's parents. Lucifer served as Vice President of Hell from 1985 to 1990. Lilith served as the President of Hell from 2010 to 2015.

Music

The first soundtrack, Mandrake Premiere: Season 1 Songs, was released on ElectroWolf.com on June 26, 2019.[4] On July 2, 2020, Mandrake Premiere: Season 2 Songs, was released.[5] A third soundtrack, titled Mandrake Premiere: Compositions of Seasons 1 & 2, was released on August 1, 2020 on the Electro Wolf website.[6]

On August 16, 2020, all three albums were made available on AudioPlanet.

Webcomic

On May 3, 2020, Lauren Latelo announced in a YouTube video that a Mandrake Premiere webcomic was in the works.[7] The comic would serve as a prequel to the web series.

The webcomic is written, lettered, and pencilled Lauren Latelo; inked by Robbie Gonzalez; and colored by Dan Chong. The first chapter, titled "A Star Is Born", was released on the official Electro Wolf website on July 31, 2020.

One Hell

On March 28, 2020, Lauren Latelo announced on YouTube that a new web series was in the works and that it would be set in the Mandrake Premiere universe.[8] On May 29, 2020, she announced through a tweet that the series would be called One Hell.[9] On August 16, 2020, a trailer titled "Welcome to Hell" was uploaded on YouTube.[10]

Reception

Mandrake Premiere has received mixed reception. Jackie Floyd of OEN described it as "a fantastic example of powerful independent animation" and "a beautiful, never-before-seen mix of black humor of music".[11] CHUCKLE.NET's Rick Hoai called it "a spectacular musical production with beautiful designs and hilarious LGBT humor",[12] and Comedy News' Jane Dee Roberts called it "an absolutely funny tounge-in-cheek work of art".[13]

Despite the aforementioned reviews, critic Drew Wynn called Mandrake Premiere "gross", "stupid", and "a horribly designed failure".[14] Vibe Network's Timothy Roberts called the show "the worst animated black comedy series on the Internet".[15] Editor.com's Patrick St. Louis posted a tweet in which he called the show "woke SJW BS".[16][17]
