- July 3 - Kouji Kawaguchi, the last president of New Japan, was inaugurated.
- November 27 - Filmmaker Ryouchi Matsushita founds Flower Film Production after departing Kazuhiko Morita Film Company.

- March 8 - Kawaguchi signs the Taii Bill into law, aimed to crack down all pro-monarchs in New Japan. The bill caused tensions between the government and the pro-monarchs to rapidly escalate to the point it led to widespread civil war which happened five days later.
- March 15 – New Edo War starts.
- April 15 - At least 36 New Japanese passengers were killed in the sinking of the Titanic. Six people, including future actor and singer Hideki Ekomoto, have survived
- June 13 – Battle of Sankuro. One of the bloodiest battles in the New Edo War, taking place near the then-town of Sankuro.
