Pirates of Noah is a 2017 religious swashbuckler action-adventure film directed & co-produced by Derrick McDonagh, and produced by Muse Entertainment and Pure Flix. The film, starring David A. R. White, features many references to the mainstream Hollywood film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Director McDonagh said in a interview with The Christian Science Monitor that Pirates of Noah was the most expensive Pure Flix production to date and one of the most expensive Evangelical Christian films of all time, with a reported budget of well over $8 million.

Production[]

The film was shot using Red Digital Cinema equipment and featured over 300 special effects shots. It also included an original music score performed by the Ottawa Sinfonia, and was mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. Several scenes were shot on board the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain replica ships and the Dar Młodzieży sail training ship in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The owners of the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain at the time, the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, were not aware of the true nature of the film as they were advised that the film being made was a "PG-13 pirate film for teen & young adult audiences."

The film was initially released as a two-disc set (the movie on a standard video DVD and again on a Blu-Ray disc format) priced as high as $30. An edited PG-rated version of the film was released on March 11, 2018. Word Records and Pure Flix also released an Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD containing Lazlo Tremblay's score performed by the Ottawa Sinfonia, a rarity amongst religious films.

Reception[]

Clark Gastell of The El Kadsreian Chronicle described the film as "a relatively high-budget story of a group of ragtag sailors who go searching for a crew of evil pirates who have a plan to take over the world, while also seeking to return a stolen treasure to it's owners. Also, many of the characters in the movie spout religious messages that would tick off the average humanist."

The film set a record by winning 12 Odyssey Film Awards (see section below).

The film has 4 out of 5 Doves from The Dove Foundation.
