From 1988 to 1998, all Sega Mega Drive consoles were manufactured in El Kadsre by Sega El Kadsre Ltd., aswell as Software Horizons.

The Model 3 is considered the most popular version of the Genesis in El Kadsre due to its compact size and easy transportability.

The console was discontinued in 1998, due to diminishing sales and Sega wanting to put more focus on the then upcoming Dreamcast console. During the last six months, it wasn't uncommon to see sales of the console for only $49.99 EK new, and some Toys "R" Us stores even selling for only $29.99 EK.

The console sold 25 million units in El Kadsre.
