The Social Democratic Union (German: Union Sozialdemokratische; French: Union Social-Démocrate, USD), is a political party in Akliland. As the direct successor to the Confederal Social-Republican Union (CSRU), the SDU has played a central role in shaping Akliland’s modern welfare state, confederal system, and environmental policies.
Today, the SDU is considered one of the country’s three leading parties, with significant influence in the Federal Assembly and across state governments. The party supports a mixed economy, strong social safety nets, climate justice, and multilingual civic engagement.
History[]
The SDU was created in 1958, when the CSRU rebranded itself to better align with the postwar political order and its growing emphasis on cooperative democracy, federal neutrality, and modern social values. The renaming reflected a shift away from radical republicanism to a broad, pluralistic, and parliamentary identity.
Despite its change in name, the SDU remains legally and ideologically tied to the CSRU and continues to honor its founders, especially Edrik Varenfeld, whose image is often associated with party history.
