Sotoshi School, stylized as SOTOSHI~SCHOOL, is an American animated science fantasy drama web series created by Steven Yugioshi and produced by Cheese Nova. The series is about a school of human–animal hybrids that teaches its students to become warriors called Avatars.

The series was conceived while Yugioshi was animated his short film Night Blasters in 2011. In 2013, he pitched the series to Cheese Nova co-founders Kevin Gregman and Matt Cozen, who agreed to work on it after finishing season one of Ghost Road.

The first season premiered on Cheese Nova' website on June 12, 2015, followed by a second season on July 1, 2016. As of March 2021, six seasons have been released. A seventh season, Sotoshi School 7, will be released on June 4, 2021.

The series has been praised for its mix of drama and science fantasy, as well as its handling of the subjects of sexual orientation, gender identity, PTSD and trauma, race, and overall mental health. Because of this, it has developed a broad fanbase and won numerous awards throughout the series' run.

Premise

Setting and concept

Sotoshi School takes place on a technologically advanced Earth in the 2060s and 2070s. More specifically, it is set in Wanoko, a city in the fictional island country of Muroh.

Within Wanoko is the Sotoshi School of Advanced Education, a high school-style school where human–animal hybrid students are trained to become warriors, referred to as "Huntsmen" (male) and "Huntresses" (female) who fight threats that face the nation.

Characters

The main characters of the Sotoshi School series are usually the teachers, staff members, and students at the fictitious school. The main characters who stayed in the series the longest are Doken Gaiakan, Hisui Midori, and Maejook Soon.

Mental health awareness is promoted through characters, especially students having traumatic backgrounds and even experiencing trauma during their experimentation and stress in claass.

Sexual orientation and gender identity also play an important role in Sotoshi School, and the series has several LGBTQ characters. Notable LGBTQ characters include Hamido Keito, Yin Mai, and Ijiochai Kiowaki.
