Star Wars: Young Jedi Knights, also known as Young Jedi Knights: The Animated Series (Star Wars YJK for short), is an animated television series based on the Berkley Books novels of the same name by Kevin J. Anderson and his wife Rebecca Moesta. Developed by Bob Richardson, Eric Radomski, and Mitch Brian, and produced by Lucasfilm Ltd. and Lucasfilm Television Animation, in association with Nelvana International (only in Canada), the series originally aired on the Fox Kids Network from June 1, 1996 to December 1, 2000, for a total of five seasons comprising 85 episodes. It focuses on the Jedi training of Jacen and Jaina Solo, the twin children of Han Solo and Leia Organa Solo. The series begins 23 years ABY (After the Battle of Yavin), when the twins are fourteen years old.
Star Wars: Young Jedi Knights was the third series in the Star Wars expanded universe after Dark Empire and X-Wing, and it uses the same animation style as Batman: The Animated Series, with Genndy Tartakovsky returned as an character animation designer. Like its predecessors, it was a ratings success and received widespread universal acclaim from audiences and critics alike for its characters, cultural references, art direction, soundtrack, humor, and themes. These include concepts rarely touched on in youth entertainment, including war, genocide, imperialism, totalitarianism, indoctrination and free choice. It won five Annie Awards, four Emmy Awards, a Genesis Award, a Outstanding Animated Program, and a Peabody Award. The show is regarded by several critics as one of the greatest animated television series of all time. Its success led to it being lead off as their production of Star Wars: Clone Wars micro-series in 2003, produced by Tartakovsky, on Cartoon Network.
