The Box Music Network, otherwise known just as the Box and formerly known as the Studio and MusicMind is a Wilsonian music channel. Launched as the Studio in 1990, it started as a standard music channel on a set rotation. In 1999, it rebranded into MusicMind after being bought out by the Yellowjacket Group. It would remain under Yellowjacket ownership for 23 years until its purchase by G4 Media Group in 2022. In 2024, its name and format would be changed again, this time to a network where viewers entirely controlled the music by typing a five-digit code on the network's website.
History[]
The Studio; early years, 1990-1999[]
The earliest hint of the Box was in September 1989 when MediaOne CEO Weston Taft revealed their first music channel would be launching to their cable service sometime in 1990. On December 23, 1989, it was announced that the channel, whose name would be the Studio, would be arriving on Cablevision and MediaOne on January 3, 1990. It primarily was advertised toward rap and hip-hop listeners, however hit a more mainstream audience by 1991.
Yellowjacket ownership, 1999-2022[]
G4 Media Group purchase, 2022-present[]
In May 2022, the Yellowjacket Group would sell off its less popular assets to other companies; this included MusicMind, which would be acquired by the G4 Media Group on August 4th.
On July 12th, 2024, G4 Media Group announced they had achieved the trademark rights for the Box's name and similar affiliates, from Channel 4, with a rebrand being advertised on MusicMind beginning July 14th.
On July 27th, 2024 at 12:32am ET, MusicMind would officially rebrand into the Box Music Network and convert into a music network completely controlled by viewers upon submitting a five-digit code on the network's website. The network gained popularity due to its unique interactive interface. In response, G4 launched the Box Select and the Box Upfront on August 26th. Due to an influx of complaints, in September, the Box started producing lyric videos for over 600 songs without music videos; they began to appear starting April 2025.
