The Junkards is a 2004 American road buddy-action film directed by Michael Bay and is based on Gigashuke Shokai's Regulus and Kepler characters. It is a spinoff of the 2003 American television series Operation Goose, and is the first film in the Operation Goose series. It stars Steven Kowalski in his debut role as "Stevonsky", a former US marine who lives in the Mojave desert while being stuck in a turf war between Bandits and Raiders. He meets another wastelander, Jules (Julian Fernandez) who helps him take back his turf from both sides.
Film director and producer Michael Bay showed an interest in the series, but showrunner Alex McCufferty denied him from making an Operation Goose film. Instead, Alex gave him rights to create a spin-off based around the desert, taking inspiration from films such as Mad Max. The film uses a lot of vehicles and weapons from the 1970s-1990s to add a rugged feeling to the film's mood.
The Junkards premiered at the Dolby Theatre in June 29, 2004 and was released in July 4, 2004 in the United States by 20th Century Fox, eventually becoming the 7th highest grossing film of 2004, between The Day After Tomorrow and Meet the Fockers, grossing $520 million worldwide on a $70 million budget. It received mixed reception from critics, with praise for it's humour, characters, action sequences, visual effects and use of licensed music, though it's plot and use of product placement was criticized. The film was nominated for Best Visual Effects at 77th Academy Awards. It was followed by a sequel: Return of The Junkards in 2008.
