The New Charlie and Lola Show Racing is a kart racing party game developed by 1happycats Interactive Media with assistance from Rare Ltd.. The game is based on The New Charlie and Lola Show, which is a very loose adaptation of the pre-school BBC series, Charlie and Lola. Show creators Abby Valenti and Michael Valenti are executive producers. The game was released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S on December 3 2024, with a release for the upcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch in 2025.

Synopsis[]

Mrs. Hansen is hosting the world's first Sonnerville Grand Prix. Lola is especially competitive against Hammering Holly Dolly. Who do you think will win?

Gameplay[]

The New Charlie and Lola Show Racing is a kart racing game similar to the Mario Kart series. The player can compete on various tracks, collect items, and power-ups which interfere with the other racers. Vehicles range from cars, motorcycles, planes, jet skis, submarines, monster trucks, snowmobiles, and rockets. Larger vehicles can destroy obstacles while smaller vehicles are much more maneuverable. Players can also customize and upgrade their vehicle into supervehicles by winning prizes during the races, additionally, they can play online with up to eight players in Party Mode or Battle Royale. The player can also be knocked out from their vehicle upon crashing or being rammed into, in which they would have to do a "Track and Field" inspired button-mashing activity to get back in said vehicle. The player can also switch between vehicles during the races. Charlie, Lola, and Hammering Holly Dolly are the only playable characters available at first, while other characters can be unlocked.

There are three cups to choose from: Charlie Cup, Lola Cup, Hammering Holly Dolly Cup, and Final Cup, which is unlocked by completing all the other three cups on 150cc difficulty. Each cup contains 4 maps, for 16 in total. There are also three difficulties to choose from: 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc. The Charlie Cup is always free, and the Lola Cup is free for 50cc, but for the 100cc and 150cc the player has to unlock the cups, or can pay to try them using in-game coins.

Development[]

Michael Valenti thought of the idea of a racing game based on The New Charlie and Lola Show ever since the first episode, "The Worst Holiday Ever" premiered in January 2012. The game's development began in late 2020 alongside The Return of The New Charlie and Lola Show. Some elements were borrowed from the cancelled Donkey Kong Racing such as the Dolby Surround Sound with an orchestrated soundtrack. "Real-world phenomena" happens during the races, such as swaying trees, fading sunlight, bustling cities, time of day, and a weather system.
