The Touhou Project Movie, known in Japan as 'Touhou Project: The Giant Rabbit of Makai' (Japanese: 東方プロジェクト:魔界の大兔, Hepburn: 'Tōhō Purojekuto: Makai no Daiusagi'), is a 2011 Japanese-El Kadsreian tokusatsu film based on the Touhou Project video game series by Bandai Namco and Drillimation Studios directed by Susumu Takajima and distributed by Toho in Japan and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in North America. The international distribution is done by HG Distribution.

The film centers on Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame as they track down and fight a humanoid rabbit youkai who attempted to eat the food for a feast at the Hakurei Shrine. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film was a financial success and was still nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Costume Design and Best Female Actor. Additionally, the film won the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Movie.

Plot

The annual Hakurei Shrine Grand Festival is coming up, and Reimu Hakurei and company are preparing the food for the festival, and orders Marisa Kirisame to protect the food from damage and thievery by youkai until the festival. While Marisa is guarding the food, she and Alice Margatroid run a pest control business to help fend off enemies.

The next day, Aya Shameimaru informs Reimu that a gigantic rabbit youkai from Makai attempted to eat the food and steal money from the donation box outside the shrine. Reimu suggests that it could've been Remilia Scarlet or Reisen Udongein Inaba, but Aya tells Reimu that it was an unidentified individual, as seen in an issue of the Bunbunmaru Newspaper.

Later, at the Youkai Mountain, Sanae Kochiya hears of this and suggests murdering the youkai. However, Yukari Yakumo persuades the rest of Gensoukyou to continue with the anti-youkai businesses, and against the threat.
