Street Fighter III - New Generation is a 3D fighting game originally released as an arcade game for the Sony ZN2 hardware in February 1997. it was the first Street Fighter game to have 3D graphics while many of the recurring gameplay features were revamped. It is also the second 3D Fighting Game by Capcom after July 1996's Star Wars - Episode 1: The Final Rebellion(which was published by LucasArts, who would be folded within Capcom by April 2013). The game, which was designed as a direct sequel to the Street Fighter II series, initially discarded all the original characters(with the exception of Ryu) with an all-new character roster led by Alex(hence the "New Generation" subtitle), veterans such as Ken and Chun-Li were added later as time release characters. Likewise, a new antagonist named Gill took over M. Bison's role from the previous games as the new boss character.

Street Fighter III was followed by an updated version released during the same year titled Street Fighter III 2nd Impact - Giant Attack, which introduced a few new features and characters. A third version, titled Street Fighter III 3rd Strike - Fight for the Future, was released for the arcades in 1999.

Gameplay[]

In many ways, the gameplay of the original Street Fighter III is based on Super Street Fighter II Turbo, but the linear plane in which characters fight often changes along a 3D battleground and with several new abilities and features introduced. Players can now dash or retreat like in the Darkstalkers series, perform high jumps and do a quick standing after falling from an attack. The game also introduced "leap attacks", which are small jumping attacks used against crouching opponents. However, the player cannot block in the air like in the Street Fighter Alpha series.

The main new feature introduced in Street Fighter III is the inclusion of Super Arts. A Super Art in Street Fighter III is a powerful special move similar to a Super Combo in Super Turbo and the Alpha games. After selecting a character, the player will be prompted to select from one of three character-specific Super Arts to use in battle. Like the Super Combo gauge in the previous game, the player has a Super Art gauge which will fill out as the player performs regular and special moves against an opponent. The player can only perform a Super Art once the gauge is filled. Depending on the Super Art chosen by the player, the length of the Super Art gauge will vary, as well as the amount of filled Super Art gauges the player can stock up.

The other new feature is the ability to "parry" an opponent's attack. Parrying, or "blocking" which is the term used in the Japanese version, is the ability to evade an incoming attack without receiving damage. At the exact moment an opponent's attack is about to hit their character, the player can move the lever forward or down to step aside without receiving damage, leaving the opponent vulnerable for a counterattack. Additionally, this also allows the player to defend against special moves and even Super Arts without sustaining damage or filling up the stun gauge, which is what happens when a player blocks a special move with the regular defensive stance. However, parrying an attack requires precise timing.

Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact - Giant Attack is a fighting game which was released by Capcom on September 1997. It is the second installment of Street Fighter III.

Gameplay[]

2nd Impact introduces a few new features to the Street Fighter III series. In addition to a Super Art, the player can also perform slightly more powerful versions of their Special Moves called EX Specials. By using a certain portion of the Super Art gauge (usually after the filled portion begins to flash), the player can power-up certain Special Moves when performing the command by pressing two or three attack buttons instead of just one. A similar type of special move was featured in the home version of Street Fighter: The Movie (Super Special Moves). Other new abilities added to the game are "grap defense", the ability to escape from a throwing attack, and "personal action", a character-specific taunt. Each character's personal action is also accompanied by an additional benefit if completed successfully; for example, Ryu's personal action will lower his stun gauge. If a second-player interrupts the gameplay to challenge the other player, then the first player will be allowed to change the Super Art of their selected character.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike - Fight for the Future is the third installment of the Street Fighter III series, released in 1999. A sequel to Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact, it continues the series' use of the parry system, command grabs, and overhead attacks.

Gameplay[]

One of the new gameplay mechanics introduced in 3rd Strike is the Guard Parry, also known as the "Red Parry", that allows players to parry during guard stun if the timing is correct. Also introduced are player evaluations after match, where the winner of a two-person match is given letter grades in Offense, Defense, Tech, and Extra. A player in Arcade mode will always be evaluated, even in case of a loss; the grades range from E (lowest) to MSF, or Master Street Fighter (highest). Street Fighter IV is a 3D fighting game originally released as an arcade game for the Namco System 246 hardware in 2003. it was the second Street Fighter game to have 3D graphics.

Street Fighter IV was followed by an updated version released the following year titled Street Fighter IV Plus, which introduced a few new features and characters. A third version, titled Street Fighter IV Max, was released for the arcades in 2006.

Gameplay[]

The Street Fighter IV fighting system uses fighting systems of both Street Fighter III 3rd Strike and Street Fighter Alpha 3. In many ways, IV still plays like a 2D fighting game, but the game further refines the side stepping mechanics introduced in III. The game uses special moves and super combos familiar or similar to the previous games in the series. Like in both the Darkstalkers series and the Alpha series, the super combo gauge, used to do Super Combos, was divided into three levels. The game introduces various new features to enhance the player's combat choices.

Aside from throwing the opponent or wearing away their life by using special moves to drain it, another way to fight blocking is the "Guard Break". The Guard Break is a move that, if it connects with the blocking opponent, breaks the block and makes the opponent dizzy. The Guard Break can be used at any time with one level of the super combo gauge. In IV Max, the Guard Break is changed into the Surprise Blow, which still stuns enemies on contact and doesn’t need a level of the super combo gauge to work. However, unlike the previous Guard Break move, the move is guardable and stuns only if it's used on a crouching opponent.

A special move can be done after a normal move. This is called "Cancelling". In the process of doing a special move or Super Combo, another Super Combo can be performed. This is called a "Super Cancel" and can be done with Super Combos. A normal or special move can also cancel into a Guard Break, called a "Cancel Break".

Street Fighter IV Plus is a fighting game which was released by Capcom on August 2004. It is the second installment of Street Fighter IV.

Gameplay[]

The original version of Street Fighter IV Plus retains all the features from the previous game, Street Fighter IV, including original features such as "Guard Breaks" (unique moves which cannot be blocked by an opponent) and "Super Canceling" (the ability to cancel a Super Combo into another Super Combo).

The primary new feature in the game are "Excel Combos", ("excel" being abbreviation for "extra cancel"). Much like the "Custom Combos" featured in the Street Fighter Alpha series, Excel Combos allows player to connect a series of basic and special moves for a limited time. During an Excel Combo, the player begins with a basic move and can follow up with a different basic move or follow-up a basic move with a special move, which can be followed by a different special move. However, the player cannot connect any move with the same move, nor can they cancel special moves into basic moves during an Excel Combo.

Street Fighter IV Max is the third installment of the Street Fighter IV series, released in 2006. A sequel to Street Fighter IV Plus.

Gameplay[]

Street Fighter IV Max follows a similar gameplay system to its predecessor, Street Fighter IV Plus (2004), with characters being able to pull off similar moves like Super Combos and Meteor Combos. However, the difference here is that the "Guard Break" system from the previous installments has been "removed" and replaced with a similar system called the "Surprise Blow" system which does not use up energy-stored "Super Bars", and rather than being unblock-able, works as an over-head attack that can be blocked, but only when standing.

Another new feature is the "Character Edit" mode, which allows the player to complete a set of missions as the character Ace, who, by default, has only two command moves (called Elbow pad and Jumping knee pad in the command list). Completing these missions increase the player's EXP, which can be used to purchase many new Special Moves for him. However, he can only use three Super Moves, two Super Combos, and one Meteor Combo at a time. He is also the only character to have two playable versions of himself, in which both sides can be edited.

The core gameplay is essentially the same as previous installments, but Street Fighter IV Max features team battles, similar to games like Sega's Tekken Team Tournament, allowing players to switch between characters when the appropriate gauge has filled. New with the tag team system is the "Critical Parade" which uses two super bars from each character and a full tag meter to call in the opponent for a double team attack in which both characters are controlled by the player and have unlimited Super Combos for a brief period. As a character is defeated, their remaining super bars are transferred to their team mate allowing one character to stock up to six Super Combos, this is called the "Emotional Flow". Each player can have up to four characters, however the life bar becomes divided between the four. The only exception to this is the final boss.
